Global Endometrial Ablation |
|
| |
Abnormal uterine bleeding affects approximately 20-25% of healthy, premenopausal women.
Traditionally, hysterectomy has been the surgical procedure of choice for execessive
uterine bleeding refractory to medical management but a number of alternatives exist today,
the most common of which is global endometrial ablation.
Procedure Description
Destruction of the uterine lining using heat (hot water balloon or bipolar radio frequency devices)
What To Expect
This procedure will dramatically reduce the amount
of menstrual flow you experience. 40% of women will
stop having any menstrual flow. The procedure is
done under general anesthesia, in an outpatient surgery
center with no incisions and takes <10 minutes to perform.
Effective contraception is mandatory after the
procedure.
Postprocedure
Pelvic cramping of mild-moderate intensity for 6-8
hours after the procedure. Pain medication will be
prescribed for you.
Watery-bloody vaginal discharge for 2-4 weeks.
Abstain from intercourse for 5 days after procedure.
Pregnancy should be avoided after ablation.
